The kasodo ceremony ( Traditional ceremonies )

The Kasodo ceremony is held in Tengger, East Java. The Tenggerese bring their offerings to the crater of mount Bromo. This religious festival is held annually when the moon is full in the Kasodo month according to the Tenggerese calender. Tengger comes from the names of Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. This ceremony is held to commemorate their youngest child, Kusuma.
For a long time Roro Anteng and Joko Seger had no child. Then they meditated and prayed on mount Bromo for children. They promised to submit the youngest children to gods if gods gave them children. Gods gave them 25 children. However, the couple were unwilling to sacrifice the youngest child, Kusuma. They hid him away from the crater. Suddenly the volcano erupted and swallowed Kusuma. Then the volcano become quiet. They heard Kusuma screamed asking for his parents willingness to sacrifice for him. He also said to hold a ceremony of his offering every time when there is full moon. The offerings must be in the form of a cattle and farm products. Since then, this traditional ceremony is held for people staying around the volcano.
